4 Safe to install
The challenge facing Apple with the successor to the Apple Watch Ultra is significant. Upon its launch, the watch took a bold departure aimed at outdoor adventurers, showcasing features and materials that aligned well with its intended use. Its size and price might deter some users, yet it has proven to be an exceptional smartwatch, justifying its perfect score of 5/5 in our review, and it continues to impress in subsequent usage.
As we look forward to the anticipated Apple Watch Ultra 2, here are several improvements we would like to see:
- Avoid Increasing Size
There are early rumors suggesting that the screen on the Apple Watch Ultra 2 might be larger than its predecessor. While this is initially concerning, if the overall case size remains the same, it could be acceptable. The current Apple Watch Ultra is already a sizable device but is manageable for those accustomed to larger watches. Enhancing screen size without enlarging the watch itself seems prudent at this stage. - Consider a Smaller Option
While increasing size may not be advantageous, introducing a smaller variant could broaden its appeal. The considerable dimensions of the Ultra may alienate potential users with smaller wrists or those who prefer compact watches. Balancing size and battery capacity will be essential; if the Apple Watch Ultra 2 does not significantly surpass the battery life of the Series 8 (or forthcoming Series 9), it risks redundancy. By minimizing external design elements, such as button guards, a 47mm model could reach a wider audience while maintaining functionality. - Integrate Satellite Connectivity
With the introduction of satellite connectivity in the iPhone 14 series and LTE functionalities already in place for the Ultra, adding satellite capabilities to the Apple Watch Ultra 2 could enhance its appeal as a standalone emergency tool. Although technically demanding, this feature aligns with the adventurous spirit of many Ultra users, permitting greater independence from their iPhones during excursions. - Include a Standard Band
While the distinct bands that accompany the Apple Watch Ultra complement its design, they may not be ideal for everyday wear. A more practical band option would allow users to wear it comfortably throughout their day-to-day activities. Providing a standard band such as the silicone Solo Loop would make the watch less visually imposing while catering to a wider audience. Additionally, offering this band in an exclusive color for the Apple Watch Ultra 2 could maintain an element of exclusivity.
